The Sitar is one of the most well known instruments from the subcontinent of India and has been in use since approximately the 18th century. It is a plucked stringed instrument and features 7 main playing strings on the arched frets, and anywhere from 11 to 13 sympathetic strings below the frets. It is commonly played in Hindustani (North Indian classical) music, but has been popular in the West since The Beatles used the unique and rich sounds of the Sitar in several of their songs. The Sitar has also been used in the work of several other artists including The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Morphine, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Perhaps the most famous sitarist is Pandit Ravi Shankar. This Empire Sitar is ideal for beginning students. The body is composed of seasoned gourd, and the neck is composed of teak wood.
