Kala MK-B Makala Baritone Ukulele w/ Gig Bag

Posted by Robert Finch on 31st Jul 2020

I used to work in a music store and have played guitar for over 50 years.

I bought this uke to help my granddaughter transition to guitar. I may want to use it for some recording. If you do not already know this, the baritone uke is tuned d-g-b-e, so the chord shapes and names transfer directly to the guitar.

The uke is well made. It has a good finish and a warm sound. The Austin Bazaar description does not include that it has a truss rod. The action was a little high when I received it. I pulled out one of my truss wrenches (hex wrench) and turned it clockwise a little more than one quarter turn (as far as it would go) which resulted in perfect height with no buzz. One of the issues my granddaughter has had with the smaller ukes is the tension of the strings at the first fret. I believe this baritone will be much easier for her to play.

The tuner that comes in the pack is a quality tuner with a display that is easy to read.

The strap is Willie Nelson style: around your neck, under the instrument and up the front to hook in the bottom of the sound hole.

The Aquila strings and the instructional DVD are a plus.

Everything is five stars to this point. The gig bag is a tad short for the size of the uke. I could get it in (really tight fit) but no way my granddaughter can.

I never had a ukulele before, but my novice opinion is that this is great. Looked clean and sparkly, and nice. After learnIng how to tune it, it sounded awesome. 5++ all arounds

    Kala Mk-B bundle

Everything arrived safely, though I wondered how. The uke was in a nice Stagg black and silver baritone uke case, with the strings covered by cardboard. This was then placed in a big box with a small amount of paper to keep it from moving. Not great, but okay. The uke itself showed nice workmanship, no visible external flaws, and was easily tuned once warmed up. It needs tuning every two days, which, considering how dry the house is from wood heat, isn't bad in my opinion. I'm already playing a bunch of songs and find this instrument to be exactly what I needed for convenience. Grabbing this from the case is so easy, enjoyable, and coupled with my wife liking the sound (versus her dislike of a saprano uke), it's all good.
